What Is Starlink?

Starlink is SpaceX's internet service delivered from space. Instead of one or two satellites orbiting far above the Earth, Starlink uses thousands of small satellites flying much closer — at an altitude of about 340 miles. Flying lower means signals travel a shorter distance, which makes the internet faster and more responsive than older satellite systems.

As of early 2026, there are over 6,000 Starlink satellites in orbit, making it by far the largest satellite constellation ever deployed. SpaceX launches new batches regularly, and the system is designed to eventually support tens of thousands of satellites to increase capacity and coverage.

For users, Starlink works through a small dish antenna that sits outside your home or vehicle and connects to the satellites overhead. Setup takes minutes. In areas where cable or fiber internet doesn't reach — rural Montana, remote Alaska, conflict zones in Ukraine — Starlink has become a lifeline.

Why It Matters

About 3 billion people worldwide still lack reliable internet access. Most of them live in places where running cables underground or stringing fiber-optic lines is too expensive for private companies or too remote for governments to prioritize. Starlink can serve those areas from orbit without any ground infrastructure beyond the user's dish.

In Ukraine, Starlink terminals became critical military and civilian infrastructure after Russia invaded in 2022. When conventional communications were disrupted, Starlink kept hospitals, military units, and emergency services connected. Elon donated thousands of terminals early in the conflict, though the relationship between SpaceX and the Ukrainian government has had some public friction over terms of service.

Starlink is also expanding into aviation, maritime, and mobile use cases. Airlines, cruise ships, and RV travelers can all use Starlink. The service is available in over 100 countries.

What Elon Says

Elon frames Starlink as both a commercial product and a mission-critical piece of SpaceX's financial engine. Revenue from Starlink subscriptions helps fund the Mars program — the profits from connecting Earth pay for the infrastructure to leave it.

He regularly posts about Starlink expansion — new countries coming online, new capabilities, satellite launch milestones. He has also been vocal about Starlink's role in humanitarian situations, and has engaged publicly on controversies including decisions about service availability in conflict zones.

Elon sees Starlink as evidence that private space companies can build infrastructure that governments cannot or will not — and that the commercial case for space is real, not theoretical.

Key Terms Explained

Low Earth Orbit (LEO)

The region of space between about 100 and 1,200 miles above Earth. Starlink satellites fly at around 340 miles. Being close to Earth means signals arrive fast — much faster than older satellites 22,000 miles up.

Latency

The delay between sending a signal and getting a response. Low latency means fast, responsive internet — important for video calls and gaming. Starlink's latency (20–40 milliseconds) is close to cable internet. Older satellite internet had latency of 600+ milliseconds, which made it nearly unusable for live communication.

Satellite Constellation

A large group of satellites working together as a system. One satellite can only cover a small area at a time. With thousands working in coordination, Starlink can cover the entire globe continuously.

Ground Station

A facility on Earth that connects the satellite network to the regular internet. Your data travels from your dish up to a satellite, down to a ground station, and then onto the internet — all in milliseconds.

Starshield

The government/military version of Starlink. Designed for secure communications, earth observation, and military use. Operated separately from the consumer Starlink service.
